Description

Georgia (the country, not the US state) has become one of the easier places in the region to travel in and one of the harder to explain to your home carrier — many Western plans treat it as an expensive non-EU destination. Meanwhile, Georgia itself has fast, cheap mobile internet if you can get onto it. A Blikst Georgia eSIM runs on Cellfie (the Geocell/Cellfie Mobile network operating across the country), with 3G and 4G coverage across Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Mestia, Kazbegi, and most of the wine-country routes through Kakheti.

Where Cellfie reaches

Tbilisi has strong 4G city-wide, including the old town, Vake, Saburtalo, and the funicular up to Mtatsminda. Batumi, on the Black Sea, has good 4G through the boulevard, the botanical gardens, and up into Adjara's tea-country villages. Kutaisi has reliable coverage, especially around the airport that most EU budget flights land at. The mountain areas — Stepantsminda (Kazbegi), Mestia (Svaneti), and the Khevsureti valleys — have 4G in the villages and thinner coverage on the passes and hiking trails. Vardzia, David Gareja, and the Kakheti wine roads through Sighnaghi and Telavi have 4G along the main routes, patchier on rural side tracks. Expect signal drops on the Georgian Military Highway between Gudauri and Stepantsminda, especially through the tunnels and the Jvari Pass.

Cost vs. roaming

EU carriers typically charge Georgia as a "rest of world" destination because it's not in the EU's roam-like-home zone — common rates are €5–€10 per day. UK post-Brexit, US, and Australian carriers are similar or worse. A local Magti or Geocell SIM is cheap if you make it to a shop with your passport; a Blikst plan sits on the Cellfie network and activates when you land, without the shop visit.

Activation when you arrive

Install the profile over Wi-Fi before you fly. Most visitors land at Tbilisi (TBS) or Kutaisi (KUT) on a Wizz Air route from Europe. Switch off airplane mode on arrival and the plan registers on Cellfie. If you're entering overland from Turkey at Sarpi, Armenia at Sadakhlo, or Azerbaijan at Lagodekhi, the eSIM picks up Georgian towers once you're over the border.

Apps and data habits for Georgia

  • Bolt: The default ride-hailing app across Tbilisi and Batumi. Much cheaper than taxis flagged off the street and the fare is metered in-app.
  • Wolt: Food delivery across the main cities — khinkali and khachapuri at 11pm is a legitimate travel strategy.
  • Google Maps and Maps.me: Tbilisi is well-mapped; Svaneti and mountain regions benefit from offline Maps.me or OsmAnd for trail detail.
  • Google Translate Georgian pack: Mkhedruli script is decorative and hard to parse as a beginner — camera mode handles menus and signage.
  • Wine apps and Vivino: If you're touring Kakheti, Vivino's offline scan is useful for the small family marani (cellars) where labels are Georgian-only.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A long weekend in Tbilisi runs comfortably on 3 GB. A one-week Tbilisi-plus-Kazbegi trip fits 5 GB. The classic two-week Tbilisi-Batumi-Kutaisi-Svaneti loop comfortably uses 10 GB. Remote workers and digital nomads staying a month in Tbilisi (very popular for the one-year visa-free stay) should plan 20 GB or more, especially with video calls.

Practical notes

Georgia's mobile internet is genuinely fast and cheap — once you're on a local network, 4G speeds compete with western Europe. Hotels, guest houses, and wineries almost universally have Wi-Fi, but the gap between them (on the Military Highway, in the Tusheti jeep tracks, on the hike to Chalaadi Glacier) is where your eSIM matters. Install the profile before you fly, and land at Tbilisi or Kutaisi already connected to the Cellfie network.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Georgia eSIM runs on Cellfie, the Geocell/Cellfie Mobile network operating right across the country. You get 3G and 4G speeds, and Georgia's mobile internet is genuinely fast and cheap once you're on a local network, with 4G that competes with western Europe. Tbilisi in particular has strong 4G city-wide, so day-to-day browsing, maps and video calls all run comfortably.

Cellfie reaches Tbilisi with strong city-wide 4G, including the old town, Vake, Saburtalo and the funicular up to Mtatsminda. Batumi, Kutaisi and the Kakheti wine roads through Sighnaghi and Telavi all have solid 4G on the main routes. Be honest with yourself about the mountains, though: Stepantsminda, Mestia and the Khevsureti valleys have 4G in the villages but thinner signal on the passes, and expect drops on the Military Highway between Gudauri and Stepantsminda, especially in the tunnels and the Jvari Pass.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code provided to install the profile. Do this over Wi-Fi before you fly. The plan activates automatically when you arrive in Georgia, so just switch off airplane mode on landing and it registers on Cellfie. Most visitors land at Tbilisi or Kutaisi, but if you cross overland from Turkey, Armenia or Azerbaijan it picks up Georgian towers once you're over the border.

Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so it's worth checking our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works. As a quick test, your phone must be carrier-unlocked and eSIM-capable: on an iPhone look under Settings, General, About for an EID number, and on Android check your network or SIM settings for an eSIM or digital SIM option.

It depends on your trip. A long weekend in Tbilisi runs comfortably on 3 GB. A one-week Tbilisi-plus-Kazbegi trip fits about 5 GB. The classic two-week Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi and Svaneti loop comfortably uses around 10 GB. If you're a remote worker or digital nomad staying a month in Tbilisi, which is very popular thanks to the one-year visa-free stay, plan for 20 GB or more, especially with regular video calls.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travelling companion's phone. That's handy for working from a guest house in Tbilisi or staying online on the road. Bear in mind it relies on Cellfie's signal, so hotspot speeds will be excellent in the cities but limited in weaker mountain spots like the Military Highway or the Tusheti jeep tracks, where coverage thins out anyway.

This is a data plan rather than a traditional line, so it doesn't come with a local Georgian phone number for standard calls or SMS. In practice that's rarely a problem: you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime or Telegram. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone, so you'll still receive your usual calls and texts if you keep roaming switched on.

Usually, yes. EU carriers typically bill Georgia as a rest-of-world destination because it's outside the roam-like-home zone, with common rates of around 5 to 10 euros per day, and UK, US and Australian carriers are similar or worse. A local Magti or Geocell SIM is cheap but means finding a shop with your passport. A Blikst plan sits on the Cellfie network and activates the moment you land, so you skip the shop visit entirely.
