Description

Finland invented the mobile phone industry — at least Nokia-era did — and it shows. Coverage is world-class, 5G is widespread, and even the far north of Lapland, where you're chasing the aurora or sitting in a glass igloo, has better signal than most rural parts of more southerly countries. A Blikst Finland eSIM runs on Telia, one of Finland's three main operators alongside Elisa and DNA, with 4G and 5G across Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Oulu, Rovaniemi, and most of the Arctic Circle tourism zone.

Where Telia works well

Helsinki has blanket 5G. The Helsinki Metro (M1 and M2) has in-tunnel coverage on modern stretches. Turku, Tampere, Oulu, and the main Inter-City rail corridor all have strong 4G/5G. Rovaniemi (the Santa Claus Village airport, effectively) has 5G downtown and 4G across the surrounding resort zones. Further north — Inari, Saariselkä, Ivalo, Kilpisjärvi — has solid 4G in villages and on the main E75 road. Finnish Lapland's fell fjells, cross-country ski tracks, and snowmobile routes far off the main roads can drop to 3G or nothing, but it's better than most Arctic destinations. The archipelago (Suomenlinna, Porvoo, the Åland Islands) has coverage near settled areas; Åland technically uses a different carrier arrangement and your Finland plan may not cover it — check before heading there.

Cost vs. EU roaming and airport SIMs

EU travellers with "roam like home" on their domestic plan probably have Finland included — check first. UK post-Brexit plans may charge £2–£6 per day. US carriers typically charge $10–$12 per day. A Finnish prepaid SIM is easy to pick up at R-Kioski and other convenience stores; a Blikst plan saves that step if you want to land already connected.

Activation when you land

Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly. When you land at Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL), Rovaniemi (RVN), Oulu (OUL), or Turku (TKU) and switch off airplane mode, the plan registers on Telia automatically. The Helsinki airport train into central Helsinki (the I or P line) runs every ten minutes and has in-tunnel coverage — your first test of the connection.

Apps and data habits for Finland

  • HSL app (Helsinki): Public transport tickets for the Metro, trams, buses, and the Suomenlinna ferry. Pay in-app; the QR code is your ticket.
  • VR (Finnish Railways): Inter-city and sleeper trains to Lapland. The night train to Rovaniemi is a popular Christmas-season move.
  • Aurora alert apps (My Aurora Forecast, Hello Aurora): Northern lights predictions for Kp-index thresholds. Essential if chasing aurora from Ivalo or Inari.
  • Bolt and Yango: Helsinki ride-hailing. Uber pulled back from Finland; Bolt dominates.
  • Wolt: Finnish food-delivery unicorn, originally from Helsinki. Works across all major cities.
  • Google Maps: Fine for cities. For hiking in Pallas-Yllästunturi or Urho Kekkonen NP, offline AllTrails or Nationalparks.fi routes are better.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A long weekend in Helsinki runs on 3 GB easily. A one-week Helsinki-and-Lapland trip (fly north to Rovaniemi, stay in a glass igloo, return) fits 5 GB. A classic two-week Finland grand tour — Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, Lapland — uses 10 GB. Cross-country ski trips or longer Lapland stays in cabins should size for 10–20 GB, since your cabin Wi-Fi may be patchy. Remote workers staying a month in Helsinki usually need 20 GB or more.

Practical notes

Finnish hotels, hostels, and cabins (mökki) almost universally have good Wi-Fi, though remote Lapland cabins can be exceptions. Public Wi-Fi is common in Helsinki cafés, libraries, and transport hubs. Your eSIM covers you on trains, in rental cars, on the snowmobile, and during the reindeer-farm visit. Install the profile before you fly, download offline hiking maps for any fjell trips, and land at Helsinki-Vantaa already connected to Telia.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
