Description

Estonia punches well above its weight on connectivity — it's the country that digitised government services first, where e-Residency was invented, and where 5G rolled out earlier than most of western Europe. A Blikst Estonia eSIM runs on Telia Estonia, one of the country's top three operators alongside Elisa and Tele2, with 4G and 5G across Tallinn, Tartu, Pärnu, Narva, and most of the country including the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa.

Where Telia Estonia reaches

Tallinn Old Town and the wider city has blanket 5G. Tartu, Pärnu, Narva, and Viljandi have strong 4G and partial 5G. The Via Baltica (E67) linking Tallinn to the Latvian border has consistent coverage. Lahemaa National Park, the forest reserves of Alutaguse, and Soomaa's bogs have coverage in populated areas and thinner signal in the deep interior. Saaremaa (including the Panga cliff and Kuressaare Castle) has 4G across most populated zones and the ferry route from Virtsu. Hiiumaa is similarly well-covered near Kärdla and the lighthouses. The Estonia–Finland ferry (Tallink and Viking Line from Tallinn to Helsinki) has decent mobile signal near each coast and patchier reception mid-Gulf.

Cost vs. EU roaming

EU travellers with "roam like home" will likely already have Estonia covered — confirm with your home carrier. UK post-Brexit plans often charge £2–£6 per day here. US carriers are typically $10–$12 per day. A local Telia or Elisa SIM is easy to pick up at R-Kiosk or supermarkets; a Blikst plan saves the step and has you online from arrival.

Activation when you arrive

Install the profile over Wi-Fi before you fly. Land at Tallinn (TLL), Tartu (TAY), or Pärnu (EPU), switch off airplane mode, and the plan registers on Telia Estonia. If you're arriving by ferry from Helsinki or Stockholm, the eSIM picks up on Estonian towers as soon as you're close enough, usually well before you dock. The tram from Tallinn Airport into the Old Town takes about 15 minutes and has consistent signal the whole way.

Apps and data habits for Estonia

  • Bolt: Bolt was founded in Tallinn. It dominates ride-hailing here — more reliable than taxis and cheaper than Uber. Also scooters and food delivery.
  • Tallinn transit (Ühiskaart app): Tallinn Old Town residents travel free on public transport; visitors use QR-based Bolt or contactless cards. Tram 4 from the airport is the main route.
  • Wolt: Finnish neighbour but dominant for food delivery across Tallinn and Tartu.
  • Google Maps: Fine across the country. For hiking in Lahemaa or the Soomaa bogwalks, offline trail apps like AllTrails or Estonian RMK maps work better.
  • e-Estonia apps: If you're an e-Resident, Smart-ID or Mobile-ID authentication runs through your phone — worth having that sorted with the right SIM.
  • Sauna culture: Book smoke-sauna experiences in Võrumaa or Mooska through Instagram DMs and WhatsApp. Genuinely how it works.

Plan sizing for typical trips

A long weekend in Tallinn fits 3 GB. A one-week Tallinn-Tartu-Saaremaa loop runs on 5 GB. A two-week Baltic States itinerary with Estonia as the starting leg uses 10 GB if you're spending roughly half the time here — otherwise a regional Baltic plan may fit better. Digital nomads and e-Residents spending a month in Tallinn usually need 20 GB or more for video-call-heavy remote work.

Practical notes

Estonia is one of the most Wi-Fi-dense countries in Europe — hotels, cafés, even parks and public squares have free wireless. Your eSIM covers you on trams, ferries, rental-car drives to the bog boardwalks, and the Tartu–Võru–Setomaa drive south. Install the profile before you fly, and land at Tallinn or Tartu already connected to Telia Estonia.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
