Description

Chad is one of the harder countries in Central Africa to stay connected in, and getting a local SIM as a foreigner involves a passport photocopy, a visit to an Airtel or Moov shop in N'Djamena, and a patience reserve you might not have after a 12-hour flight. A Blikst Chad eSIM skips the paperwork and lands you on Airtel Chad's 3G / 4G network, which is the broader of the two commercial operators and the one most NGO and oil-sector workers default to.

Coverage across a very large country

Chad is the fifth-largest country in Africa, and most of its landmass is Sahel or Sahara. Airtel's usable 4G footprint is concentrated in N'Djamena, Moundou, Sarh, Abéché, and along the main road between them. Lake Chad, the Ennedi Plateau, and the Tibesti Mountains in the north drop to 3G or lose signal altogether for long stretches. If you're heading to Zakouma National Park, expect 3G near Goz Beïda and essentially nothing inside the park itself. Plan on satellite communication for anything deep in the desert.

Cost vs. picking up a local SIM

An Airtel Chad SIM bought in-country is cheap in local-currency terms, but requires ID registration, a working Chadian address to register against, and a trip into central N'Djamena — not trivial with post-curfew schedules and unreliable taxis. International roaming on most Western carriers isn't even offered for Chad, and where it is, expect $15-plus per day. A Blikst eSIM activates on arrival on the same Airtel towers, no shop visit required.

Arrival at N'Djamena International (NDJ)

Install the eSIM profile on hotel or home Wi-Fi before you fly — airport Wi-Fi at NDJ is not reliable. When you land and switch off airplane mode, the Airtel line should register within a few minutes. If you're arriving overland from Cameroon via Kousséri, the plan activates on the first Chadian tower you pass, usually just after the Chari River bridge.

What travellers actually use data for here

  • WhatsApp: The default communication channel for drivers, fixers, and NGO coordinators. Keep it open and keep notifications on.
  • Maps.me and offline Google Maps: Routes into the interior aren't well-mapped online, and road conditions change seasonally. Download offline tiles for your entire corridor before you leave the capital.
  • Currency and translation: French is the working language for business; Chadian Arabic is common in markets. XE for CFA franc conversions, Google Translate for menus and signage.
  • Security alerts: Follow your embassy's WhatsApp or Signal broadcast if you're staying longer than a week — conditions shift quickly in border regions.

Plan sizing by trip length

A short business trip to N'Djamena — three to five days, hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings — works on 1–3 GB. A two-week NGO rotation that includes field visits to Moundou or Abéché wants 5–10 GB, because you'll lean on the eSIM whenever lodge Wi-Fi breaks. Longer contractor stays (a month or more) benefit from 20 GB, particularly if you're tethering a laptop for reporting. Data habits here tend to run leaner than in Europe — the network simply isn't fast enough to burn through a gig on video, which keeps your average usage down.

A few practical notes

Power cuts are common in N'Djamena, and cell sites sometimes drop with them — a brief outage on your eSIM doesn't mean anything is wrong with the plan. USSD codes and SMS-based services from Airtel Chad won't work on this line (it's data-only), so don't expect to use mobile-money services tied to a local number. For banking 2FA back home, keep your primary SIM line alive for SMS.

Install before you fly, land with working data, and skip the Airtel shop queue entirely.

eSIM FAQ

An eSIM, or Embedded SIM, is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a mobile plan without using a physical SIM card. It is built directly into your smartphone, smartwatch, or tablet and provides the same functionality as a physical SIM. With eSIM, switching between carriers or adding a secondary number becomes seamless and hassle-free.

Getting an eSIM is simple! Check if your device supports eSIM technology. Then, purchase an eSIM plan from your preferred carrier or from our website. After purchase, you’ll receive a QR code or activation details to set up the eSIM on your device in minutes.

Most modern smartphones, including the latest iPhones, Samsung Galaxy models, and Google Pixel devices, are eSIM compatible. Check your device settings under “Cellular” or “Mobile Data” to see if eSIM options are available. Alternatively, refer to your device’s specifications or contact us for guidance.

The number of eSIMs you can have depends on your device. For example, most iPhones allow multiple eSIM profiles but only one active eSIM at a time. Some Android devices support dual-active eSIMs, giving you more flexibility. Check your device’s specifications for details.

Activating an eSIM involves a few easy steps: 1. Purchase an eSIM plan from our website or your carrier. 2. Scan the provided QR code using your device’s camera or enter the activation code manually. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add the eSIM profile to your device. Once activated, your eSIM is ready to use!

To activate an eSIM on iPhone: 1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. 2. Scan the QR code from your eSIM provider or enter the activation details manually. 3. Choose your preferred settings for data, calls, and messaging, then tap Done. Your eSIM is now set up and ready to use.

Yes, eSIM offers several advantages over traditional SIM cards: Convenience: No physical SIM card required. Flexibility: Easily switch between carriers or plans. Space-saving: Frees up internal space in devices for additional features. Eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste. Upgrade to eSIM and experience seamless connectivity like never before.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to transfer your eSIM using the same QR code, as QR codes can only be scanned once for security reasons. If you wish to use your eSIM on a new device, you will need to contact your carrier to request a new activation code or QR code. Once issued, you can set up the eSIM on your new device following the standard activation process.
