Chad is one of the harder countries in Central Africa to stay connected in, and getting a local SIM as a foreigner involves a passport photocopy, a visit to an Airtel or Moov shop in N'Djamena, and a patience reserve you might not have after a 12-hour flight. Coverage across a very large country
Chad is the fifth-largest country in Africa, and most of its landmass is Sahel or Sahara. Airtel's usable 4G footprint is concentrated in N'Djamena, Moundou, Sarh, Abéché, and along the main road between them. Lake Chad, the Ennedi Plateau, and the Tibesti Mountains in the north drop to 3G or lose signal altogether for long stretches. If you're heading to Zakouma National Park, expect 3G near Goz Beïda and essentially nothing inside the park itself. Plan on satellite communication for anything deep in the desert.
Cost vs. picking up a local SIM
An Airtel Chad SIM bought in-country is cheap in local-currency terms, but requires ID registration, a working Chadian address to register against, and a trip into central N'Djamena — not trivial with post-curfew schedules and unreliable taxis. International roaming on most Western carriers isn't even offered for Chad, and where it is, expect $15-plus per day. Arrival at N'Djamena International (NDJ)

Plan sizing by trip length
A short business trip to N'Djamena — three to five days, hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings — works on 1–3 GB. A two-week NGO rotation that includes field visits to Moundou or Abéché wants 5–10 GB, because you'll lean on the eSIM whenever lodge Wi-Fi breaks. Longer contractor stays (a month or more) benefit from 20 GB, particularly if you're tethering a laptop for reporting. Data habits here tend to run leaner than in Europe — the network simply isn't fast enough to burn through a gig on video, which keeps your average usage down.
A few practical notes
Power cuts are common in N'Djamena, and cell sites sometimes drop with them — a brief outage on your eSIM doesn't mean anything is wrong with the plan. USSD codes and SMS-based services from Airtel Chad won't work on this line (it's data-only), so don't expect to use mobile-money services tied to a local number. For banking 2FA back home, keep your primary SIM line alive for SMS.
