Description

Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the Balkans' best-value trips — Sarajevo's old bazaar and wartime history, Mostar's Stari Most, the Una river valleys around Bihac, and the drive between them through some of Europe's less-travelled landscape. It's also outside the EU roam-like-home bubble, which means most European visitors suddenly hit roaming charges when they cross from Croatia or Montenegro. A Blikst Bosnia and Herzegovina eSIM runs on BH (BH Telecom) with 3G / 4G coverage across Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka, Tuzla, Zenica, and the main M-roads linking them.

Where BH Telecom's network works best

Sarajevo (including Bascarsija and Ilidza), Mostar, Banja Luka, Tuzla and Zenica have consistent 4G. The A1 motorway between Sarajevo and the Croatian border is covered. The M-17 Sarajevo–Mostar route, which is one of Europe's more scenic drives, has 4G in the valleys and 3G on the passes. Sutjeska National Park, the Tara canyon areas, and the back roads through Herzegovina's karst have long 3G stretches and occasional dead zones. Jahorina and Bjelasnica ski resorts have 4G in the base villages.

What this saves vs. roaming or a local SIM

Bosnia is not in the EU, so EU roam-like-home does not apply — travellers used to free roaming in Croatia or Montenegro will suddenly see per-day fees once they cross. UK and US carriers treat BiH as international too. BH Telecom, m:tel, and HT Eronet sell prepaid SIMs in Sarajevo but registration takes time. A Blikst plan runs on the same BH network without the shop visit and keeps you online at the border.

Arriving at SJJ, OMO, or BNX

Install the profile over home Wi-Fi before you travel. When you land at Sarajevo (SJJ), Mostar (OMO), or Banja Luka (BNX), switch off airplane mode and the BH line registers automatically. Most travellers arrive overland from Dubrovnik, Split, or Zagreb — the eSIM activates at the border crossing once it sees a BiH tower. The same applies crossing from Serbia or Montenegro.

What you'll actually use data for here

  • Google Maps: Bosnia's road numbering changes between the Federation and Republika Srpska entities, and place names sometimes differ between Bosnian/Croatian and Serbian spellings. GPS solves that.
  • WhatsApp and Viber: Viber has strong market share in the Balkans. Guesthouse owners, taxi drivers, and tour operators use either or both.
  • Flix and local bus apps: Intercity bus travel is the norm — Centrotrans, Globtour, and Flixbus all compete. Having data for schedule and ticket lookups saves station time.
  • Uber is absent: Uber does not operate in BiH. Local taxi dispatch apps (Sara, Crveni Taxi in Sarajevo) or calling a stand directly are the options.
  • Currency awareness: The KM (konvertibilna marka) is the official currency, pegged to the euro at roughly 1.96. Euros are accepted in some tourist areas but change is given in KM. Bank apps need data.

Mine awareness and staying on trail

Unexploded ordnance from the 1992–95 war still exists in specific rural areas. Marked trails are safe; going off-trail in former frontline regions is not. The Bosnia and Herzegovina Mine Action Centre (BHMAC) publishes suspected-hazard maps. If you're hiking outside established routes, have the reference material cached — your eSIM data is the difference between an informed decision and a guess.

Plan sizing for BiH trips

A 3-day Sarajevo weekend: 1–3 GB. A week combining Sarajevo, Mostar and the Neretva valley: 5 GB. Two-week overland loops adding Banja Luka, Jajce and the Una: 10 GB. Ski-season stays in Jahorina or Bjelasnica with video calls back home: 10–20 GB. Remote workers in Sarajevo co-working spaces: 20 GB or more once work meetings factor in.

Install before you fly, land connected, and skip the BH Telecom storefront in Bascarsija. The cevapi at Zeljo doesn't wait around, and Mostar's Stari Most looks best with maps already loaded.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Bosnia and Herzegovina eSIM runs on BH Telecom, one of the country's main operators, with 3G and 4G speeds. You get consistent 4G across Sarajevo, Mostar, Banja Luka, Tuzla and Zenica, while more remote roads and mountain passes fall back to 3G. It's the same BH network the local shops sell, but you skip the storefront visit and stay online from the moment you cross the border.

Coverage is strongest in the cities — Sarajevo including Bascarsija and Ilidza, plus Mostar, Banja Luka, Tuzla and Zenica all have solid 4G. The A1 motorway towards the Croatian border is covered, and the scenic M-17 Sarajevo to Mostar route has 4G in the valleys with 3G on the passes. Be honest with yourself about the wild bits: Sutjeska National Park, the Tara canyon and Herzegovina's karst back roads have long 3G stretches and occasional dead zones. Jahorina and Bjelasnica ski bases get 4G.

Right after purchase you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, usually within minutes. Install the profile over home Wi-Fi before you travel by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic: when you land at Sarajevo (SJJ), Mostar (OMO) or Banja Luka (BNX), or arrive overland from Dubrovnik, Split, Zagreb, Serbia or Montenegro, just switch off airplane mode and the BH line registers itself the moment it sees a local tower.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to be sure. Your phone must be carrier-unlocked and eSIM-capable. On an iPhone, go to Settings, General, About and look for an EID number; on Android, check your network settings for an eSIM or add-eSIM option. If you can find that, you're good to install the QR code.

It depends on your trip. A three-day Sarajevo weekend is comfortable on 1 to 3 GB. A week combining Sarajevo, Mostar and the Neretva valley suits around 5 GB. Two-week overland loops adding Banja Luka, Jajce and the Una are better on 10 GB. Ski-season stays in Jahorina or Bjelasnica with video calls home run 10 to 20 GB, and remote workers in Sarajevo co-working spaces should plan on 20 GB or more once meetings factor in.

Yes, tethering and hotspot are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop or a travel companion's phone. That's handy in Sarajevo co-working spaces or for checking BHMAC mine-hazard maps and bus schedules from a bigger screen. Just remember that hotspot use draws from the same data allowance, and on the 3G stretches through Sutjeska, the Tara canyon and the Herzegovina back roads speeds will be slower than in the cities.

This is a data-only plan, so it doesn't come with a local phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's no problem here — you can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp, Viber or FaceTime, and Viber in particular has strong market share in the Balkans, so guesthouse owners and taxi drivers use it. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone for anything essential.

Bosnia sits outside the EU roam-like-home bubble, so visitors used to free roaming in Croatia or Montenegro suddenly hit per-day fees the moment they cross, and UK and US carriers treat the country as international too. BH Telecom, m:tel and HT Eronet sell prepaid SIMs in Sarajevo, but registration takes time. A Blikst plan runs on the same BH network without the shop visit and keeps you connected right at the border crossing.
