Description

Antigua and Barbuda is a two-island state in the eastern Caribbean that markets itself (with some basis) as "365 beaches" — one for every day of the year. Antigua is the populated main island with St John's as capital and English Harbour as the yachting hub; Barbuda is the quieter, pink-sand-beach neighbor reached by a 90-minute ferry or short flight. A Blikst Antigua and Barbuda eSIM runs on Digicel with 3G / 4G coverage across St John's, Jolly Harbour, English Harbour, Falmouth, and parts of Barbuda.

Where Digicel's network actually reaches

St John's, the cruise terminal, Jolly Harbour, and the west-coast resort strip are on 4G. English Harbour, Nelson's Dockyard, Falmouth, and the south-coast bays have 4G. The interior roads around Shirley Heights and Fig Tree Drive are covered. Barbuda is thinner: Codrington (the main village) has 3G / 4G and the coastal stretches around Princess Diana Beach have 3G, but the interior — the Frigate Bird Sanctuary and the beach road to Coco Point — drops off in stretches. Day-trip boat excursions to Great Bird Island and Green Island will have patchy to no coverage.

Cost compared with roaming

Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile international day-passes put Antigua and Barbuda in the $10–$12 per day range. UK carriers are similar or higher. A cruise-stop day or a week-long beach stay racks up fees fast. Flow and Digicel both sell prepaid SIMs in St John's but that's an errand off the resort strip. A Blikst plan lands you online at V.C. Bird International without the detour.

Arriving at ANU or by cruise

Install the eSIM over home Wi-Fi before you fly. V.C. Bird International (ANU) is Antigua's main airport. When you clear immigration and switch off airplane mode, the Digicel line registers automatically. Cruise passengers docking at Heritage Quay or Nevis Street Pier in St John's get the same handoff as they step off the ship. Barbuda arrivals via the Barbuda Express ferry from St John's or a short charter flight into Codrington's airstrip activate the plan on the Barbuda tower footprint.

What you'll actually use data for here

  • WhatsApp: Sailing charters out of English Harbour, Shirley Heights Sunday Sundowner reservations, beach-bar bookings, and Barbuda ferry confirmations all run through WhatsApp.
  • Google Maps: Antigua's road network winds and some beach access points aren't well-signed (Half Moon Bay, Rendezvous Bay). GPS helps.
  • No Uber or Lyft: Ride-hailing apps don't operate here. Licensed taxis are booked by phone or through hotels. Your contacts list matters.
  • Cruise line apps: Royal Caribbean, Carnival, NCL, Celebrity, and Virgin all use app-based onboard systems. St John's port Wi-Fi is unreliable.
  • Weather apps: Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, peak risk August to October. Irma in 2017 and recent active seasons make weather tracking part of Caribbean travel prep.

Barbuda realities after Irma

Barbuda was essentially levelled by Hurricane Irma in 2017 and its rebuild has been uneven. Codrington's pink-sand west coast is stunning and underdeveloped; some resorts (Barbuda Belle, the rebuilt Lighthouse Bay) are back, and the Robert de Niro Nobu development has been underway. Infrastructure including mobile coverage is less dense than on Antigua. Plan for slower speeds and occasional gaps on Barbuda, and budget your expectations accordingly.

Plan sizing for Antigua and Barbuda trips

A cruise-stop day in St John's: 1 GB. A long weekend based at English Harbour or Jolly Beach: 2–3 GB. A week-long all-inclusive stay with resort Wi-Fi carrying streaming: 3–5 GB. A week split between Antigua and Barbuda: 5 GB. Two-week family villa stays: 10 GB. Sailing charter crews spending two weeks on the hook in Falmouth or Nonsuch Bay: 10 GB as a backup to marina Wi-Fi.

Install before you fly, land connected, and skip the Digicel storefront in St John's. The first Wadadli at Shirley Heights on a Sunday evening is a better use of the golden hour, and English Harbour's superyacht line-up is more interesting than any SIM-shop queue.

eSIM FAQ

The Blikst Antigua and Barbuda eSIM runs on Digicel, one of the main Caribbean operators, with 3G and 4G coverage. You'll get 4G across the busier parts of Antigua, including St John's, Jolly Harbour and the west-coast resort strip, with speeds dropping to 3G in the thinner spots, particularly on Barbuda. It's plenty for maps, messaging and everyday browsing while you're island-hopping.

On Antigua you're on 4G in St John's, the cruise terminal, Jolly Harbour, the west-coast resorts, English Harbour, Nelson's Dockyard, Falmouth and the south-coast bays, with the interior roads near Shirley Heights and Fig Tree Drive covered too. Barbuda is thinner: Codrington has 3G and 4G, Princess Diana Beach gets 3G, but the interior, the Frigate Bird Sanctuary and the road to Coco Point drop off. Boat trips to Great Bird Island and Green Island are patchy to none.

Right after you buy, you'll get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, so delivery takes only minutes. Install it over home Wi-Fi before you fly by scanning the QR code provided. Activation is automatic: when you land at V.C. Bird International, clear immigration and switch off airplane mode, the Digicel line registers itself. Cruise passengers docking at Heritage Quay or Nevis Street Pier, and Barbuda arrivals via the ferry or a charter flight, get the same automatic handoff.

Most modern smartphones work fully with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device. As a quick check yourself, on an iPhone look under Settings, General, About for an EID number, and on Android check the network or SIM settings. Your handset also needs to be carrier-unlocked. If you see an EID and your phone is unlocked, you're almost certainly good to go.

It depends on your trip. A cruise-stop day in St John's needs about 1 GB. A long weekend based at English Harbour or Jolly Beach suits 2 to 3 GB. A week-long all-inclusive stay leaning on resort Wi-Fi runs 3 to 5 GB, while a week split between Antigua and Barbuda is closer to 5 GB. Two-week family villa stays or sailing charter crews wanting a backup to marina Wi-Fi are better on around 10 GB.

Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travelling companion's phone. That's handy on a sailing charter in Falmouth or Nonsuch Bay where the eSIM backs up patchy marina Wi-Fi, or at a villa with several people online. Just remember Barbuda's coverage is thinner and speeds can dip to 3G, so a hotspot there will feel slower than on Antigua's west coast.

This is a data plan, so it gives you mobile internet rather than a local phone number for traditional calls or SMS. In practice that's all you need here, since sailing charters, Shirley Heights Sunday Sundowner reservations, beach-bar bookings and Barbuda ferry confirmations all run through WhatsApp. You can call and message over the internet using apps like WhatsApp or FaceTime. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone.

Usually, yes. Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile international day-passes put Antigua and Barbuda in the 10 to 12 US dollar per day range, and UK carriers are similar or higher, so a cruise day or a week-long beach stay racks up fees fast. Flow and Digicel sell prepaid SIMs in St John's, but that means an errand off the resort strip. A Blikst plan simply lands you online at V.C. Bird International with no detour.
