It runs on Telenor Montenegro (now operating under the Yettel brand in some markets, but delivered on the former Telenor infrastructure and usually labelled Telenor on your device). You get 4G and 5G speeds, with full 5G in Podgorica and around the Bay of Kotor, and reliable 4G or 5G along the coast. It covers the coastal belt, the central valley and the main highway up toward Serbia.
Podgorica, Budva, Kotor, Tivat, Herceg Novi and Bar all get 5G, and the coastal E-80 between Herceg Novi and Ulcinj is well covered throughout. Be honest with yourself about the mountains: some hairpins up to the Njegoš Mausoleum drop briefly, Durmitor has offline stretches on the Tara Canyon rafting sections and higher Bobotov Kuk trails, and Biogradska Gora and the Prokletije highlands in the north-east are thinner. Download offline maps before heading up.
Right after purchase you get a confirmation email with your eSIM details, then you scan the QR code to install it. Do this on home Wi-Fi before you fly. When you land at Tivat (TIV) or Podgorica (TGD) and switch airplane mode off, the Blikst profile registers on Telenor Montenegro automatically and activates on arrival. Remember to turn off data roaming on your home line so it does not pick up charges.
Most modern smartphones are fully compatible with Blikst eSIMs, though a few exceptions exist, so check our detailed compatibility list to confirm your device works. Your phone also needs to be carrier-unlocked. To check eSIM support, look on an iPhone under Settings, General, About for an EID number, or in your Android network settings. If in doubt, our compatibility list is the quickest way to be sure.
It depends on your trip. A weekend in Kotor and Budva fits in 2 GB. A week touring Kotor, Budva, Ulcinj and Lovćen with a rental car sits on 3 to 5 GB. Two-week trips combining the coast, Durmitor rafting and a loop to Lake Skadar want around 10 GB. Remote workers basing in Kotor or Tivat for a month should size 20 GB or higher. Live traffic and maps are the main drain.
Yes, tethering and hotspot use are supported, so you can share your connection with a laptop, tablet or a travel companion's phone. It works best where the network is strong, meaning Podgorica, the Bay of Kotor and the coastal belt on 5G or 4G. Up in Durmitor or the northern highlands, where reception is patchy, a hotspot will only be as good as the signal your phone is holding at the time.
This is a data plan, so it gives you mobile internet rather than a local phone number. For calls and messages you use internet-based apps over the data, like WhatsApp, Viber or FaceTime. In Montenegro WhatsApp and Viber are how villa hosts, boat charter operators and rafting outfits tend to reach you. Because the eSIM is a separate digital line, your physical home SIM and number can stay in the phone.
Usually, yes. Montenegro is not in the EU, so roam-like-home does not apply. Most EU and UK carriers charge around €5 to €10 per day on Balkan roaming bundles, and US travellers on typical international plans pay about $10 per day. A Blikst eSIM for a week undercuts all of those comfortably. Physical Telenor, M:tel or One SIMs are sold at Tivat and Podgorica airports but require ID registration.
